September Qualifier

It’s our first slam qualifier of the season!

After a great preseason slam to settle in at our new venue, we’re ready to get the season started with a full-on qualifier bout this Wednesday!

Sign-ups are at 6:30, Slam begins at 7. Get there early to get seats, order some food, and maybe volunteer to be a judge.

The slam is ALL AGES, and Yayo Taco offers great food and drink options for everyone. For adult beverages, you can’t beat their selection of beers and tequilas, all at outstanding prices.

Bring your friends!!! But there WILL be adult themes and language, so maybe leave the really innocent ones at home.

(PS: Seldom Seen Poets at Sunrise Coffee is going dark to accommodate us on this one-time switch to a Wednesday night. Our deepest gratitude goes to Hannah Marisahl for so graciously shutting down just to help us out. Future slams will all be on the first Thursday of the night, and we have some great features coming to town so keep your eyes on the Las Vegas Slam fan page for all the details!)

Season Opener!!

It’s open season y’all! We’re back with a new venue on a new night, ready to kick off the 2011-2012 slam season with a bang! Come down to Yayo Taco on Maryland for a couple hours of poetic madness and verbal combat. Free entry. Open sign-ups begin at 6:30.

Slam Rules & Regulations Overview

Las Vegas Slam uses Poetry Slam, Inc.’s standard rules.

Slam Rules:

- All performers must present an original composition.

- Performances will be limited to 3 minutes with a 10 second grace period. After 3:10, half a point will be deducted per 10 seconds over (e.g. 3:12 or 3:19 are both -0.5 from judges’ scores, 3:24 is -1.0, 3:39 is -1.5, etc.)

- No props or costumes are allowed. Performers may not use musical accompaniment unless it is created by his/her own body.

- All performances will be scored by a panel of 5 randomly selected judges. No judges may be romantically involved (or otherwise sharing bodily fluids) with any performers.

Las Vegas Slam Team Qualification Process:

- The poets with the three highest cumulative scores at each slam will be considered qualified for semi-finals.

- Poets who have already qualified are allowed to continue competing at each slam.

- Poets who qualify for semi-finals but fail to compete will not be considered for finals competition.

- Top 10 cumulative scores advance to Grand Slam Finals. The top 5 scores from Grand Slam will decide the team (4 team members + 1 alternate).

- If any member of the team drops from the team or is deemed unable to continue, the spot will be offered to the next highest scorer from Grand Slam. Should that person also be unable to compete, it will be at the discretion of the slammaster and coach whether to continue moving through the Grand Slam final placements, or to hold a slam-off including all qualified semi-finalists.
